Sodwana Bay
Sodwana Bay or
‘Sordies’ as it is affectionately called – lies approximately 500 km north
of Durban. The site is unique in that it is protected in every sense of the
word; protected by the Parks Board; protected as part of a marine and coastal
reserve; and protected and safe enough to launch. Sodwana has a variety of
reefs, depths and so much more to explore. There are reefs for everyone, from
the newly qualified diver to the thrill-seeking technical diver.
Sodwana Bay Nature Reserve with its many exciting coral reefs and outstanding climate, has distinguished itself as one of the premier sport diving destinations in the world. It offers many popular dive sites with a great diversity of underwater seascapes and marine flora and fauna including branching, table and plate corals, beautiful overhangs, drop-offs and mushroom rocks, as well as spectacular night dives.
In summer, loggerhead and leatherback turtles come out of the sea to nest on the Sodwana beaches. Guided turtle tours are popular with visitors. Aside from Sodwana’s wealth of opportunities for diving , a five-km self-guided trail is available for the enjoyment of nature lovers and bird enthusiasts.
Lake Sibaya
Lake Sibaya, is the largest natural fresh water lake in the country, with an
area of 60 to 70 km2. Surface water in the surrounding coastal plain
often disappears completely during dry years, making the lake the only source of
permanent water for birds and mammals. The lake contains the second largest
population of hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius and crocodile Crocodylus
niloticus in KwaZulu-Natal. Eighteen species of fish occur in the lake and
feeder streams. One of these, a freshwater goby Silhouetta sibayi, is endemic to
the system. Twenty two species of frog and eight reptile species are associated
with the lake. Of the 279 bird species recorded in the area, 60 are closely
associated with the lake for breeding, feeding and roosting.
Hluhwe Game Reserve
Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings
such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation
laws, where today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant
savannah. The Park became world renowned for its white rhino conservation.
Established in 1895 game viewing is the prime attraction. Viewing hides overlook
pans and waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.
The Park covers some 96 000 ha
and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora.
The wide range of plant life in the park gives rise to a diversity of mammals,
birdlife, reptiles and amphibians.
The Big Five - lion, rhino (black
& white), elephant, buffalo and leopard are all to be seen in the park, as
well as a variety of other species, including cheetah, wild dog and giraffe. It
is also one of the best places in the world to see nyala.
Hluhluwe is characterised by hilly topography, and this northen section of the
park is noted for its wide variety of both bird and animal life. In excess of
300 species of birds have been recorded.
Aliwal Shoal
The sea life at Aliwal
Shoal is absolutely spectacular during the winter months. The spotted
ragged-tooth sharks reappear on the reef for the mating season. June & July
brings the Sardine run and September the humpback whales, their young and
Manta’s become visible. The Aliwal Shoal – a fossilized sand dune lying
about 5kms off-shore, provides one of the world’s best dive spots.
There are a few wrecks near the shoal – the most recent being the Produce that sank in 1974 – which provides the exciting experience of wreck-diving. The sloping hull of the ship is the favoured hang-out of scorpion fish and vast groupers and small schools of the endemic harlequin goldie.
Total
trip cost R9 500.00, inclusive all meals, dives, accommodation, transport and
